“Maybe it had to be broken
before my heart could be open.
Maybe the shattered parts are the places where Your love starts,
and now, I am closer to where you are
with every beat of my broken heart.”
Savior, the world can be so beautiful. You made it, and when that’s what the center of our attention is, You and Your glory, it’s so much easier to sing songs like It is Well, because of course it’s well because life is well, all is well.
But what about times when we fail, not just stumble, but fail. We try so hard, we give every part of us, and we’re told “No.”
Not just told no, though. It’s not some gentle type of no accompanied by a tender touch to our back. It’s spit at us. The type of no that makes us wonder why we even entertained the idea that we were good enough.
And then there’s the unbelievable pain that happens when unbelievable tragedies happen to us.
U n b e l i e v a b l e.
Because it wasn’t supposed to happen like that; it wasn’t supposed to go this way. People we love aren’t supposed to be diagnosed, people we care about aren’t supposed to disappear whether it be from the earth or just our personal lives, grandmothers that taught us how to sew and how to love aren’t supposed to forget who we are, people aren’t meant to stop loving each other.
But they do.
All these things that our hearts aren’t ready for happen.
And we’re never ready. The people around us aren’t ready to help and don’t know how to love us through it the way we need, so they hurt too. And the world ends up overflowing with hurt instead of overflowing with the love its Creator made it with. The world starts panicking in its pain like a child lost and separated from their parent.
The world starts overflowing with hurt because we need our Father but we forgot what He looks like, what He sounds like, we forgot the way He loves.
Help us, all Your children, to find You again. We’ve gotten so lost; we don’t even know where to start anymore. Call our names and let us recognize Your voice. Help us find Your love amidst all the earth’s pain.
We’re crying out, in desperation for You, the One who loves each and every one of our souls.
Help us see You despite the blur that tears put in our vision, make us seek You when nothing seems to provide the real comfort our aching hearts need, let us never lose sight of the true destination, back to Your loving arms.
We’re looking for You, Savior, help us find You and never let us wander away again.
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted
and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
