preface: On July 10th, I left for the mission trip I had been waiting for since 2013. A huge thank you to everyone who supported me financially and spiritually. I wouldn’t have been brave enough to accept this calling or equipped enough to embark on this trip to the DR without each prayer and donation. Thank you so so much to everyone who helped make this happen.
Now I know what hugs are supposed to feel like, hugs that attack you, hugs that surround you, hugs that are overwhelming because they are full of so much love.
Now I know that the kisses from 3-year-old Israel and 5-year-old Senchayli are worth so much more attention than the first kiss from a boy I worried so much about at 16 years old.
Now I know that excess shoes are meant for giving away not for putting in a closet.
Now I know that things aren’t worth a dime, but love is worth absolutely everything.
Now I know what love is.
Now I know the laughter that I would give 1000 piggy back rides to hear.
Now I know the genuineness of Haitian graciousness versus the monotony of my own thank you’s.
Now I know that needs are meant to be met, and we, as God’s people, are meant to meet them.
Now I know that a little Haitian voice saying my name is an honor.
Now I know that a sweet little Haitian voice singing “Cristo me ama” is the most beautiful sound I’ve ever heard.
Now I know how to love.
